School of Aeronautics

The School of Aeronautics could hardly be better situated for the research and study for Aeronautics. With its location in Xi’an, the school is in a unique position to combine the best of the aeronautical industries in the city. The predecessors of the school are the Aircraft Department and the Civil Aviation Engineering College. The Aircraft Department was founded in 1952 by merging three Aeronautics Departments of Shanghai Jiaotong University, Nanjing University and Zhejiang University. The next big expansion occurred in 1970 when the Aircraft Department of Harbin Engineering College merged into the Department. With the approval of the AVIC (Aviation Industries of China) and CAAC (Civil Aviation Administration of China), Civil Aviation Engineering College was jointly founded by NPU, AMECO (Aircraft Maintenance & Engineering Corporation) and CNWA (China Northwest Airline) in 1994. Another big development was the Aircraft Department’s merger with the Civil Aviation Engineering College in 2003.

School of Mechanical Engineering

Founded in 2002 by merging the former Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Aircraft Manufacturing Engineering, the School of Mechanical Engineering is one of the largest and oldest schools at NPU. It has its own history which includes the former Department of Aircraft Manufacturing founded in 1979 which consisted of two dominant specialties, the airplane technics and aeroengine, both founded in 1952. Based on Aeronautics & Astronautics, the school is dedicated to the national economy, and focuses on developing advanced and distinctive manufacturing technics, intelligent assembly and Micro-nano-technology.

The school is determined to continue building a high-level research component to make contributions to national industrialization and manufacturing information. There are five departments and three laboratory teaching centers in the school. There is one national teaching center of mechanical fundamental courses, one national fundamental experiment teaching center of mechanical engineering, and two provincial and ministerial key laboratories; the Contemporary Design and Integrated Manufacturing Technology and the Micro and Nano Electro-mechanical Systems Center. In addition, there are three practice bases for undergraduate innovation, two laboratories for postgraduate innovation, and six provincial and eight international joint research institutes. Since the “Tenth Five-year Plan”, the School has achieved 38 Provincial and Ministerial Awards for Scientific Progress and 11 teaching achievements. In recent years, the school has earned two scientific progress awards at the national level, and one of them was elected in 2006 as “China’s top ten scientific and technological progress in higher education.” It has also achieved two national teaching achievements, five state first-class disciplines, forming the only mechanical fundamental first-class disciplines group in China. Students’ technology work has won three championships in the National Robotics Competition and one in Mechanical Creative Design.

School of Automation

The predecessor of Automation School embraces two parts. One is the Department No. nine of the Northwestern Polytechnical University, founded in 1959, and the other is the programs of Harbin Institute of Military Engineering, formed in 1953 and merged with NPU in 1970.  Department of Automatic Control was founded in 1980 and then renamed School of Automation in 2003. During the past 50 years, the school has made significant achievements in teaching as well as research.

The school covers seven first-class disciplines: Control Science and Engineering, Instrument Science and Technology, Communication and Transportation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, Mechanical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. The first three disciplines offer doctoral degrees. Control Theory and Control Engineering is a national key discipline and specialty, Navigation, Guidance and Control is a national key discipline (cultivating), and Precision Instrument and Machinery and System Engineering are key provincial and ministerial disciplines. The school offers 12 doctoral programs, 17 master’s programs and several post-doctoral research stations.

School of Automation emphasizes quality teaching and requires outstanding professors in the classroom. Principles of Automatic Control is honored as a National Quality Course. Principles of Sensor and Detecting Technology and Principles of Programmable Controller and Its Application are selected as Shaanxi Provincial Quality Courses.

The school operates two ministerial key laboratories, two ministerial engineering laboratories and one provincial demonstration center of experiment teaching.

School of Electronics and Information

The predecessor of the School of Electronics and Information at Northwestern Polytechnical University was the Department of Electronic Engineering, founded in 1958. Presently there are five undergraduate degree programs, ten master’s degree programs, seven doctoral degree programs, and three centers for post-doctoral research.

The school has a teaching staff of 109, including 32 professors (25 Ph.D. supervisors) and 36 associate professors. Over 60% of the teaching staff hold a Ph.D. There are also 22 famous experts/researchers from oversea serving as part-time or visiting professors at the school.

The number of registered students in the school is 2,152, where 863 students are conducting their postgraduate research. There are 1,263 students in the undergraduate programs, with 26 oversea students. Most alumni are with state-owned enterprises in the fields of Aeronautics, Astronautics, and Marine Engineering, and global leading companies in IT.

There are two disciplines in the school, Electronics Science and Technology, and Information and Communication Engineering. There is also one national key sub-discipline, i.e. Circuit and System, one national first-grade featured specialty, and one provincial distinguished specialty. An Aviation Science and Technology Key Lab, a Shaanxi Provincial Key Lab, five international cooperation labs (including China-Russia and China-France), and one provincial teaching center for electronic experiments have been set up in the school.

In the past five years, the school has undertaken over 70 research projects with the Natural Science Foundation of China, the National High Technology Research and Development Program (863 project) of China and the National Key Basic Research Program (973 project) where the research funding has reached about 100 million CNY. Over 30 teaching and research achievements have been awarded at the national, provincial or ministry level. There have been 954 research publications and 336 papers have been indexed by SCI, EI and ISTP.
